Inter Milan has finally completed a move to sign Christian Eriksen from Tottenham Hotspur. Despite the fact at one point it seemed the move was not going to be completed before the end of the transfer window, both sides eventually reached an agreement. The Serie A giants acquired the Denmark international for a reported €20 million fee.

One would think landing a player such as Eriksen would solve most of Inter’s problems, and whoever thinks that wouldn’t be entirely wrong. Eriksen is one of the best playmakers in the world, and he has enough talent to take over a game and change its course at any given moment. Plus, coming from the English Premier League should help Eriksen’s chances to thrive on Italian soil. The intensity of both leagues favors Eriksen, as the lack of pace – comparatively to the EPL – should suit him well.

However, Eriksen is not going to be the player able to solve most of Inter’s issues this season. The Nerazzurri have enjoyed a great season this term, but they have been lacking in several areas where Eriksen might not be very helpful.

What areas does Inter Milan need to improve afterward signing Eriksen?
For instance, the Dane is not going to solve the constant tactical problems that Inter suffer due to playing with a three-man backline. This might sound crazy given Inter own the league’s best defense with only 18 goals conceded, but the stellar performances from Samir Handanovic have saved Inter time and time again.

Also, Eriksen is not known for being a goalscoring threat. Inter’s second-biggest issue lies in the lack of depth behind Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku. Alexis Sanchez should return to injury and that will be a sizable boost to the attacking line. But Eriksen doesn’t help in that department, either. They have firepower upfront and can produce against the opposing goal. But they need another scoring threat. Eriksen does not provide that.

The one area where Eriksen will boost Inter’s quality on a great deal will be the playmaking side of things. The Danish attacking midfielder should be a perfect pairing for Stefano Sensi in midfield. And he also represents a considerable upgrade over in-house alternatives such as Matias Vecino, Marcelo Brozovic and Borja Valero.

We can’t deny Eriksen will be a huge upgrade for Inter moving forward. But he is not going to be enough if Inter will be looking to reduce the gap they have against Juventus in their race to win the Serie A title in 2019/20.
